What Is Bloat or Torsion In Dogs?

What Is Bloat or Torsion In Dogs?

Many dog owners don't know what bloat or torsion, as it's known in some parts of the world, is until it happens to them.

However, not knowing doesn't protect your dogs, and since this can be a life-threatening or even fatal condition for dogs, it's so important that dog owners know what to look for and what to do.

What Is Bloat/Torsion in Dogs?

If large, deep-chested dogs run around and play right after eating a big meal, there is a very real danger of their stomachs twisting. This results in a build-up of trapped gasses and stomach acid, and that quickly becomes a very dangerous situation.

What Are the Symptoms of Bloat/Torsion in Dogs?

The dog then suddenly becomes very lethargic and starts panting very heavily. The bloated stomach causes the dog to collapse, and fatal shock sets in. What this dog is actually going through is a condition known as gastric torsion, which, in a nutshell, is a death sentence to a dog if not treated immediately.

What Should You Do If You Think Your Dog Has Bloat/Torsion?

Unfortunately, some of the conditions that affect dogs require immediate attention. As soon as you notice any of the signs and symptoms mentioned above, you need to take action. If you "wait and see" in this situation, the results could be fatal.

Immediate veterinary action is absolutely vital if you suspect that your dog is suffering from gastric torsion or your dog is surely going to die. Under these circumstances, it’s those few minutes that could mean life or death for your dog. There is absolutely nothing that you can do in the way of first aid to help your dog in this condition – only your vet can save your dog.

As soon as you see that your dog has gastric torsion, carry your dog to your car while you get a friend or family member to call your vet’s office to let them know what has happened and that you’re on your way. They know that time is the most critical factor here, and they will have everything ready by the time you arrive.

As soon as you arrive at your vet’s office, get your dog inside as soon as possible. The chances are that you will see your vet immediately, even if there is a waiting room full of other patients. If you are on time, then your vet may be able to save your dog’s life and correct the gastric torsion by performing surgery immediately.

Higher Risk After One Case

Even if your dog survives one incident of bloat or torsion, that does not mean it can't happen again. In fact, dogs that have had one incident are more likely to have another. So start practicing good feeding habits to keep your dog eating slower and keep them calm and quiet for an hour or two after a meal.

It's not always possible to prevent this kind of situation, but it never hurts to take proactive steps.
